Power Cordz™ Bicycle Control Cables

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. My Power Cordz™ don't fit through the cable inlet hole on my shifters; what should I do?
A. Note: The shifters which have inlet hole issues which we are aware of are the SRAM X.0, Shimano LX and XT. Please let us know if you encounter this issue on other mechanisms.

Solution 1:

Reduce the size of the end of cord to fit through the inlet and then pull the cord through the inlet. (this takes a bit of finesse to cut the cord length-wise in half)
  1. Using an X-acto® or other very sharp blade, cut the Cord lengthwise 2 inches (5 cm) or more
  2. Cut out the fibers
  3. Cut half of the coating diagonally to keep from catching while feeding the end through.
  4. Feed the end through the inlet hole gently, using needle nose pliers to pull the Cord if needed.
Solution 2:
Enlarge the shifter inlet holes' diameter (because this procedure modifies other manufacturers parts, we cannot recommend this option. It may void your warranty and/or damage the shifter). The hole needs to be opened only slightly, Power Cordz™ are larger by 0.012 inches (0.3mm) in diameter.
  • Use an old rough steel cable as a file, pulling it back and forth to open up the inlet.
  • Heat a stiff wire, old cable or old spoke. Apply just enough heat (a lighter works well) to the wire to soften the plastic around the inlet hole and enlarge it.
  • Drill out the hole with a 1/16” or 1.6mm drill bit.

Q. I'm having difficulty threading the Cordz through my new housing. How can I avoid this?
A. Before starting to thread the cordz through your housing, use a very sharp blade or scissors to cut the cord end at a 45° angle with no fibers protruding. The fibers are very resistant to cutting, so use the sharpest blade you have available. We have found an X-acto® type knife to work the best. This should permit the cord to thread easily through any type of housing.

Q. As a professional cyclist, can I get a professional rate to purchase Power Cordz™?
A. Not yet. Io DuPont will implement a professional program soon. When this program is implemented, it will be announced in our email newsletter and qualified professionals will be able to buy through this program.

Q. Will Derailleur Cordz work with Sram XO trigger shifter?
A. The  Derailleur Cordz will work with Sram XO Trigger shifters without modification.
